Wood Apple Juice
Diwul kiri, or wood apple milk, is one of Sri Lanka's most beloved traditional beverages. The wood apple (Diwul in Sinhala, Limonia acidissima) is a hard-shelled fruit native to Sri Lanka and South India with a pungent, tangy pulp whose aroma is often described as a combination of raisins, tamarind, and blue cheese. Despite its intense smell, when the pulp is blended with coconut milk and sweetened with sugar or kithul treacle, it transforms into a refreshing, creamy, tangy-sweet drink. Wood apple juice is commonly sold by street vendors and is especially refreshing in the hot, humid climate.
